Why BASICS?

With the ever-evolving demographics of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region, there is a growing need to honor, respect, and value diversity in psychological theory and in practice to work effectively with people from a variety of cultural, ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds. At BASICS, we take great pride in providing culturally competent services that are consistent with the latest evidence-based developments in the fields of psychology and mental health. We combine well-researched interventions with clinical experience, ethics, client preferences and culture to guide and inform the delivery of all treatments and services we offer. Our evidence-based approach is essential because it aims to provide ethical and competent services in our work with individuals of diverse backgrounds, with the goal of improving and sustaining desired outcomes.

Why invest in self care?

Many individuals leading busy lives at work and home tend to push aside or give low priority to stress management and self-care. However, many mental health issues can be averted by checking in with how you think and gaining insight into destructive behavioral patterns that are ruling your life. Positive emotions and self-evaluation support wellbeing and effectiveness, negativity upsets your energies and impairs your functioning. Even when faced with demands and challenges, you have a choice about how you respond: with drama or calmness. While self-care does involve taking action within or in society, it is also an essential attitude for success. When all of you is working well — physical energy, realistic thinking, emotional balance, spiritual wellbeing and peaceful relationships — many problems can be avoided or managed more effectively.

Why an integrated model?

For good reason, integrated psychological care has gained increased notoriety in healthcare settings. It is a model of care that brings together multi-disciplinary professionals who work together collaboratively in teams to diagnose psychological health problems, plan and provide treatment or services, and evaluate the effectiveness of those services. At BASICS, our staff consists of a cadre of clinical psychologists, social workers, counselors, school psychologists, public health specialists and outside medical consultants who contribute to meeting the wide ranging needs of the individuals and organizations we work with. The integration of psychological and behavioral health care in a supportive, collaborative and compassionate environment can present opportunities to deliver improved holistic services that will empower and support you in dealing with your unique circumstances.

Services

Individual Therapy

A trained therapist can help people make lifestyle changes. They can also help identify underlying causes of symptoms and provide strategies for changing unwanted thoughts and behaviors. Individual therapy serves the purpose of reducing internal suffering which occurs in the form of problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, and somatic responses (sensations in the body). It may encompass many different treatment styles including psychoanalysis and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

FAMILY THERAPY

Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling (psychotherapy) done to help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. It may include all family members or just those most able to participate. Family therapy sessions can teach skills to deepen family connections and get through stressful times, even after you're done going to therapy sessions.

GROUP THERAPY

Largely due to the power of the group process, group therapy is one of the most powerful therapies for transforming individuals and their lives. Group therapy is a form of psychosocial treatment where a small group of patients meet regularly to talk, interact, and discuss problems with each other and the group leader (therapist).Group therapy attempts to give individuals a safe and comfortable place where they can work out problems and emotional issues.

Psychological Evaluations

BASICS offers psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults.  Our comprehensive assessments are designed to clarify an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in cognitive, academic, and emotional functioning. Neuropsychological assessment are also used to help to identify inefficiencies in brain functioning which contribute to learning and social/emotional difficulties.

PLAY THERAPY

Play Therapy uses a variety of play and creative arts techniques to alleviate chronic, mild and moderate psychological and emotional conditions in children that are causing behavioral problems and/or are preventing children from realizing their potential.  The therapist uses the child’s fantasies and the symbolic meaning of his or her play as a medium for understanding and communication with the child.

Couples therapy

Arguing without resolution and feeling disconnected or resentful may weigh heavily on a relationship or affect individuals in other aspects of their lives. Couples can find relief and hope by working with expertly trained couples therapists.
